Without getting into the specifics of the rules, in general, masculine nouns in the instrumental case end with ом or ем and sometimes ём, feminine nouns in the instrumental case end with ой, ей, or ью, neuter instrumental nouns end with ом or ем and plural end ами or ями.
Nominative Singular to Instrumental Singular:
кулак - кулаком
гараж - гаражом
карандаш - карандашом
массаж - массажем
ручка - ручкой
лошадь - лошадью
молоко - молоком
печенье - печеньем
Instrumental Singular to Instrumental Plural:
ручкой - ручками
другом - друзьями
карандашом - карандашами
дочь - дочерьми
ребёнок - детьми
человек - людьми
PHRASES:
Она прячется за гаражом.
(She is hiding behind the garage)

Он ударил его кулаком.
(He hit him with his fist.)

Он всегда пишет ручкой.
(He always writes with a pen.)

Мы пишем жёлтыми карандашами.
(We write with yellow pencils.)

Цветы цветут весной.
(The flowers bloom in the spring.)
